John J. Feng, MD specializes in advanced
laparoscopic and minimally invasive weight loss, or
bariatric surgery. He has dedicated his practice to
several methods of bariatric surgery, all of which
can be performed laparoscopically, and even
robotically-assisted for better precision and 3D
surgical vision. Minimally invasive procedures thus
allow for less postoperative pain, smaller scars,
fewer wound problems and quicker recovery. These
techniques include the (1) vertical sleeve
gastroplasty/gastrectomy, (2) placement of an
adjustable gastric band, or LAP-BAND® System or
REALIZE? Band, (3) Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and (4)
duodenal switch, or biliopancreatic diversion with
duodenal switch. With his years of extensive
experience in the surgical and medical care of his
patients, he believes that sleeve gastrectomy is the
main choice that optimizes patient outcomes with
great weight loss combined with least complications
short or long term.
As an American Society for Bariatric Society
Center of Excellence Surgeon and Board Certified
General Surgeon, Dr. Feng was the Medical Director
of Bariatric Surgery Services at California
Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco for
several years, and later appointed as the Medical
Director of the Bariatric Surgery Services at
Sequoia Hospital on the San Francisco Peninsula in
San Mateo County, serving for several years
also. He is a Fellow of the American College of
Surgeons. He received a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Biological Sciences from Stanford
University with Honors and Distinction in 1988 and
completed Medical School in 1993 at the University
of California San Francisco (UCSF). He trained at
UCSF for General Surgery residency from 1993 to
2001, during which time he dedicated 3 years to
wound healing research with Dr. Thomas K. Hunt. He
then completed a specialty fellowship with Dr.
Michel Gagner and Dr. Barry Salky at Mount Sinai
Medical Center in New York City in advanced
laparoscopic and minimally invasive general
surgery and bariatric surgery from 2001-2002.
Currently, his main office is located in the city
of San Carlos, in San Mateo County, at the Palo
Alto Medical Foundation San Carlos Center.
Dr. Feng has privileges at El Camino Hospital,
Mills Peninsula Hospital, and Sequoia Hospital. He
also operates at the San Carlos Surgery Center,
the Dr. R. Hewlett Lee Surgecenter of Palo Alto,
and the Menlo Park Surgical Hospital. For his
patients, in additional to nutritional support and
long-term followup, he provides support group
meetings to help achieve optimal care for them
moderated by a behaviorist and registered
dietician on a regular basis.
After completing training in advanced
laparoscopic and bariatric surgery in 2002, Dr.
Feng entered private practice and has established
himself as an expert and specialist in minimally
invasive surgery for treating obesity and many
general surgery disorders. After thriving in solo
practice in San Mateo, California, Dr. Feng joined
the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Medical Group in
the Redwood City Center in September 2009 which
was then transitioned to the comprehensive PAMF
San Carlos Center, opening in November 2014,
located in San Mateo County just near Oracle
Corporation in Redwood Shores off Highway 101.
Dr. Feng?s specialty interests include Robotic
and Laparoscopic Surgery for treatment of Morbid
Obesity. He also has interests and expertise in a
variety of Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic
Surgery for treatment of many surgical diseases
such as acid reflux, hiatal hernia, paraesophageal
hernia, inguinal hernia, ventral hernia,
incisional hernia, achalasia, tumors, stomach
ulcers, feeding tube needs, gastroparesis,
bleeding, adhesions, colon, solid organ, and
gallbladder disorders such as gallbladder polyps,
gallbladder dysfunction or dyskinesia and
gallstones. He has been specialty trained in
single-incision, robotically-assisted,
laparoscopic gallbladder surgery for the
appropriate patients.
